WEST RHODE RIVERKEEPER TO RELEASE REPORT CARD
Rates six indicators of the health of the West and Rhode Rivers
Anne Arundel County, Md. – The West/Rhode Riverkeeper announces the release of their West and Rhode Rivers Report Card, set for Saturday, April 10 at 10:00 am.
The Report Card utilizes data collected in 2009 from various sources, including West/Rhode Riverkeeper monitoring data, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works. The effort was done in collaboration with the University of Maryland's Mid-Atlantic Tributary Report Card workgroup. "Our West and Rhode Rivers Report Card is a summary of the current health of the rivers. We worked hard to make sure it is both scientifically credible and easy to understand," said Chris Trumbauer, the West/Rhode Riverkeeper.
The specific grades will be released at the event, but again this year they are generally poor. Much more aggressive actions are needed to improve the health of the West and Rhode Rivers, as well as the Chesapeake Bay as a whole. "If we are serious about improving our grades, it is time to make tough decisions." says Trumbauer.
The release will be held in Galesville, MD at the county park at the end of Galesville Road. This park is significant because it is the site of a recently completed living shoreline project and is the proposed location for a bio-retention/rain garden project to treat stormwater runoff. More restoration actions will be required to improve the water quality of the West and Rhode Rivers.
Limited parking (12 spaces) is available at the park. Overflow parking is available at Pirates Cove restaurant, adjacent to the park (please park near the back of the lot, away from the restaurant).
